Sesame Crusted Salmon and Tuna Loaf with white dill sauce

Light, airy and elegant looking, this fish loaf is a perfect answer to the eternal question. “what’s for supper?”. Especially if you have company coming, you don’t have time to go shopping and you are generally busy not having a life…or is it having too much of it? I never really grasped the full meaning of the phrase.

I have two kids, one husband, a full time job, a baby on the way and a blog or two. I do also try to have a social life, which in my case constitutes in bribing people with home made food to hang out with me. Does that count?

Most chances are, you will be able to whip up this cute little loaf with what you already have in your fridge and pantry. My 3-year-old helped me do it. I am not kidding. I served this fish loaf with an elegant white dill sauce but it it will also be yummy with your favorite tomato sauce. wonderful with some boiled potatoes and green salad.

Sesame crusted Salmon and Tuna Loaf:


For the loaf:

2 (213 gr)cans Salmon, drained
2 (170 gr)cans Tuna fish in water, drained
1 Tbsp onion powder (dehydrated onion will also work well here)
1 Tbsp Dijon Mustard
1 Tbsp ketchup
2 large eggs
1/2 cup chopped fresh celery leafs
zest of 1 lemon (only the yellow part)
Juice of one lemon
1 tsp fine salt
black pepper to taste
about 1/3 cup sesame seeds or any other colorful seed mixture you have on your hand. Be creative! A mix of white and black sesame would be gorgeous.

White dill Sauce:

1 Tbsp butter
1 Tbsp all-purpose flour
1 cup milk
1 Tbsp dry dill (don’t have any? try fresh chives!)
salt and pepper to taste


1.Preheat oven to 350F (180C). Mix everything in a large bowl and knead with your (clean!) hands until the mixture is nice and even.
2. Moisten your hands and create a nice oval loaf.
3. On a large plate, spread sesame seeds and carefully roll your loaf on all sides. If the loaf seems too fragile, let it cool in the fridge first for about an hour or you can just cheat and pat the top of it with your seeds of choice.
4. Spray your sesame crusted loaf with oil spray or gently brush with vegetable oil or melted butter. Bake for about 45 minutes. Broil for a minute or two if you want the crust to look more golden.

5. For the dill sauce: melt butter in a small sauce pan. Add flour and mix well until flour is well incorporated. Gradually add milk, whisking constantly until the mixture appears even. Continue to whisk for about 5 minutes until thickens. Add dill, salt and pepper.
6.Serve your beautiful loaf hot or cold, sliced with a sharp knife and doused with sauce.
